If you’d like a working example of using threads in Perl, check out my reapp script.  This is a utility I wrote for work, to restart tomcat applet servers.  Nothing proprietary in here, but it can serve as a decent example for others.  It’s also an example of my coding style, for anyone interested.

iPad 3, Mountain Lion

Technology Send feedback »

I’ve read lots of articles “reporting” about parts and rumors concerning what the upcoming iPad 3 will contain.  I don’t think it will have a quad-core processor, but I do think it will have a much higher resolution display, and larger battery.  I don’t care if it comes with LTE wireless network support, because I wouldn’t buy that anyway. I have a 4G LTE mifi that I’m satisfied with, and I can use the mifi with my laptop too.  I do expect the price to increase, and the 16Gb iPad 2 to stay on the market for awhile too, just like the way the older model 8Gb iPhone 4 is still being sold.

Automating system buildouts

Technology Send feedback »

I’ve spent most of the past two weeks at work helping setup two new websites.  Each contains a dozen big honkin standalone servers plus ~70 smaller virtual machines, which together make up one website to run our application.  I spent a great deal of time writing dozens of scripts and documentation to automate the process as much as possible, so the second environment went up a lot faster.  I really enjoy creating solutions that allow a single intelligent person to take 80 servers and make them usable in just a couple days.  Repeatability breeds consistency, which breeds reliability, which means everything when it comes to running production Internet websites.  Kudos to whoever originally wrote gsh (group shell) and gcp (group copy).  Those two utilities let us quickly distribute files and run commands across large groups of machines.

working on the bike

Today, I’ve only got two goals. Straighten up the living room and charge and install the new battery in my motorcycle.

It’s been a couple months since I rode, and I miss it sorely.  Maybe it’s the feeling of power and control, maybe it’s just rush you feel when the wind whips around your head, but I REALLY like riding my motorcycle.  It noticibly improves my mood, and other people have commented on that effect as well.

Facebook - jumped the shark?

I’ve decided I’ve been hitting facebook way too often. I think it becomes more interesting when you only view it once every few days. How long before we as a society decide that social networking is just a passing fad.

RHEL vs SLES Linux

Technology Send feedback »

I’m a certified RHEL 5 Linux engineer (several years ago), but my employer was purchased by a much larger company. and our new direction is all SLES Linux based. I’ve been dealing with SLES for several years now, and I’ve finally decided that my initial assessment was correct, and I definitely prefer RHEL over SLES. RHEL has several winning features. CentOS exists, for one, making free RHEL installations for development and testing quick and easy. RPMFORGE exists, which provides tons of prebuilt non-standard programs quick and easy to install. Without these two open source additions, I think RHEL would rank just barely above SLES in my book. The commercial versions are fine for production systems, where you aren’t making rapid changes on a regular basis, but the open source version rules.

Cat stories moved

News Send feedback »

You may have noticed that the frequency of cat stories has dropped drastically here. That’s because I decided to create a separate blog for my cat tales. It’s in the blog menu up top, just click on “cats". Once I figure out how to move all the old stories posted on this blog to that one, I’ll do that.

Istat Menus 3

Technology 2 feedbacks »

Mac nerds, I recommend Istat Menus 3, a (not free) system performance monitor that displays its output in the menu bar at the top. The 5 computer family pack is only $24!
