working on a weekend

Posted at 03:42:34 pm

Working on your time off sucks. But I guess I wasn’t doing anything really useful anyway. Browsing the web, laundry, sleep, watching TV, blah.

Spooky (the siamese) really likes hiding in the cardboard box he knocked over in my office. It was full of packing peanuts and plastic bags, which he first used his paw to scrape out. He’s a great cat, so full of personality, so friendly and curious. What a great pal.

As catster.com reminds me, today is Rocky’s 2nd birthday. Happy Birthday little girl!

Julius cracks me up. I’m working from home today, and he’s in the office with me. Just before he falls asleep, he lets out a woeful groan. Like he’s giving in to sleep unwillingly. He also does this thing with his tail, just like Dusty. When he’s laying down, he likes to face away from me. So his tail is closest to my hands. He waves his tail around, keeping track of my location. If I move the hand, his tail starts waving around again, until he locates it. It’s like a backup camera for your car!

The Good News Is My Rain Gear Works

Posted at 06:26:32 am

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Yesterday, I gambled that the afternoon weather forecast was wrong again, and rode the motorcycle to work. Around 4pm, sitting at my desk, I heard thunder, and a couple hours later when I left, it was still pouring rain. I donned my bright yellow Frog Toggs rain pants and jacket, and hopped on the two wheeler to ride home.

It was slow going, as any drive in the Georgia rain is. Plus, if I got over 50 mph, the rain really stung when it hit my bare hands. My Sears Craftsmen leather boots are not waterproof, and got thoroughly soaked, along with my socks and lower pant legs. A little water went down my neck, but mostly I got pretty wet at the outset just walking out to the bike to retrieve the rain gear.

The parking lot at the office was a 20′ wide stream of fast moving water, and more than once on the way home, I got splashed when riding through water on the road, or got splashed by cars going the other way. My helmet face mask doesn’t seal quite right, and fogged up pretty bad several times. My reduced visibility due to the rain and fog was the worst part of the trip, really.

Not sure what I can do about the boots. I’m pretty sure any waterproof boots or boot covers would be fairly unbearable in the Georgia heat, although the rain did drop the temps from 100 down into the low 80s pretty fast. It’ll be a couple days before everything dries out, so today I’m taking the Mustang to work.

I really need to make a decision on how I’m going to sell my old Chrysler, and get started with that. I’m tempted to get the Auto Trader deluxe package, where they send someone out to take 18 photos, and they handle all the initial calls and emails, and I only get bothered when someone actually wants to come out to test drive it.

Hope you’re all having a wonderful summer!

Dusty's Fun

Posted at 03:02:12 pm

Sometimes I open the basement door a crack, so the cats can hangout and explore the downstairs. The boys all like to go down there, and so do the younger girls, Lucky and Rocky.

What Dusty likes to do for fun is, wait until Julius (her nemesis) is in the basement, then huddle down just on the outside of the door, waiting for him to poke his head out the door. She’ll pounce on any cat that comes out, but if Jules comes out, she’ll howl and whack and chase him back either in the basement or upstairs.

Most often, I find the two of them sitting there on opposite sides of an open door, each trying to out wait the other. I really should get a photograph of that. If I walk up to them, Dusty runs away, as if she thinks she’s doing something wrong, and Jules runs out, free at last.

I love them both dearly, and wish there was some way I could get the older girls to sleep in my bed again, even just once in a while. Dusty and Echo used to always cuddle up next to me until (at least) I fell asleep, until Jules got big enough and sort of claimed me and the bed as his own.

Oh well, at least I get to cuddle with them when I’m watching TV.

Boy Cats

Posted at 06:45:50 am

My girl cats can be real sweeties at times, but boy cats are simply the best. The best cuddlers, the most playful, the friendliest most wonderful cats one could ask for. If someone were looking for a cat, I’d recommend a (fixed) male hands down.

Julius and Max both jumped in my bed last night. Julius is a regular bedtime buddy, but Max, I think, was nervous about all the fireworks. I was actually surprised Spooky didn’t join us too. Who can figure out the mind of a cat?

As I sit here typing, Jules is curled up next to me on the tabletop, and Spooky on the piano bench to my left. Rocky is relaxing on the floor to my right, just out of reach.

Rocky has been exercising her curiosity a lot lately, resulting in her being locked in the office one night and the laundry room another. She hates closed doors, and silently bolts in when I’m walking out. I only find out where she is when I start to wonder where she is, and hunt her down. She never seems the worse for wear. Five minutes later, she’s stretched out on top of my laundry basket (clean or dirty, she doesn’t care).
